Oven Cleaning Shoreditch Health and Safety Policy
Oven Cleaning Shoreditch is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety for our employees, customers and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to identifying, managing and reducing risks associated with professional oven cleaning and related domestic and commercial cleaning services within our operating area.
Policy Aims and Scope
The purpose of this policy is to provide a clear framework for safe working practices in all cleaning activities, with a particular focus on oven cleaning, appliance detailing and surrounding kitchen areas. It applies to all team members, whether permanent, temporary or subcontracted, as well as to any person who may be affected by our work on site, including customers, visitors, neighbours and other contractors.
Our aim is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and environmental harm by implementing sensible, proportionate controls and continuously improving our safety performance.
Management Responsibilities
Management has overall responsibility for implementing this Health and Safety Policy. This includes assessing risks, providing training, supervising work, supplying appropriate equipment, and monitoring compliance. Managers will ensure that all work is planned and carried out in line with relevant laws, codes of practice and industry guidelines relating to cleaning, chemical handling, manual handling, electrical safety and waste disposal.
Management will review this policy regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our services, equipment, cleaning agents or working methods.
Employee Duties and Cooperation
Every employee and worker has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff must:
Follow the safe systems of work, instructions and training provided.
Use all personal protective equipment supplied and maintain it in good condition.
Report hazards, incidents, near misses, defective equipment or unsafe conditions without delay.
Refrain from undertaking tasks for which they have not been trained or authorised.
Cooperate fully with any risk assessments, monitoring, inspections or investigations carried out by management.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting any job, our technicians are required to assess the potential risks in the working area. This includes considering slip and trip hazards, access and egress, ventilation, working in occupied homes or commercial premises, children and pets on site, electrical appliances, hot surfaces and the use of chemical products.
Safe systems of work will be implemented for all key activities, including dismantling ovens, using dip tanks or cleaning trays, working at low levels, handling heavy components such as oven doors, and using tools or mechanical equipment. Where necessary, additional control measures will be introduced to protect vulnerable people on site.
Use of Chemicals and Cleaning Products
Our cleaners handle a range of professional oven cleaning agents and related products. Only approved substances will be used, and these will be assessed under appropriate safety regulations. Up-to-date safety information for each product will be made available to staff.
Technicians must always:
Store chemicals securely and away from children, pets, food and open flames.
Use products strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and training.
Avoid decanting chemicals into unlabelled containers.
Ensure adequate ventilation in the work area and avoid inhalation of vapours or mist.
Prevent chemical splashes by using suitable PPE and careful application techniques.
Any spills must be contained and cleaned immediately using safe methods, with waste disposed of responsibly.
Personal Protective Equipment
To minimise exposure to hazards, all oven cleaning staff must use appropriate personal protective equipment provided by the company. This may include gloves, eye protection, aprons, protective footwear, masks or respirators, and suitable clothing. PPE must be worn whenever risk assessments or procedures require it and replaced if damaged or contaminated.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Oven cleaning frequently involves lifting doors, racks, trays, panels and cleaning equipment. Staff must follow safe manual handling techniques, including planning lifts, using correct posture, working within their limits and asking for assistance or using mechanical aids when necessary. Heavy components should be handled in stages and kept close to the body to reduce strain and the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
Electrical and Heat Safety
Technicians must ensure ovens and related appliances are isolated from power where required before commencing work on internal components. Care will be taken to avoid contact with wiring, heating elements and control panels unless specifically trained and authorised. No work will take place on appliances that appear damaged or unsafe until the issue is resolved or the appliance is declared safe by a competent person.
Ovens and trays must be allowed to cool to safe temperatures before cleaning begins. Staff will avoid placing hot components on unprotected surfaces that may be damaged or cause burns.
Protection of Customers, Property and the Environment
Oven Cleaning Shoreditch will take reasonable steps to protect customers, their property and the wider environment. Floor coverings and protective sheeting will be used where appropriate to prevent damage or contamination. Children, pets and other occupants will be kept away from the immediate work area, chemicals and equipment. Waste, including used solutions and residues, will be handled and disposed of in a safe and responsible manner.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff will receive appropriate induction and ongoing training covering health and safety responsibilities, safe use of chemicals, manual handling, equipment operation, emergency procedures and customer care. Additional training will be provided whenever new products, equipment or methods are introduced. Supervisors will monitor work practices to ensure that training is applied consistently and that any unsafe behaviour is corrected.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, injuries and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible so that they can be recorded, investigated and, where necessary, followed up with corrective actions. Staff will be briefed on emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of fire, serious chemical exposure, electrical hazards or injury on site. First aid provisions will be available and accessible.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Oven Cleaning Shoreditch is dedicated to continuous improvement in health and safety standards. We will regularly review our procedures, listen to feedback from staff and customers, and update this policy when required by changes in legislation, best practice or our own risk assessments. All employees are encouraged to contribute suggestions that may help to improve safety and wellbeing during oven cleaning and related services.
